Melville House, ett oberoende förlag baserat i Brooklyn, ska skyndsamt get ut senatens häromdagen offentliggjorda tortyrrapport. Skriver förlaget i ett pressmeddelande:
”Melville House has announced it will publish the Senate Intelligence Committees ‘Study of the Central Intelligence Agencys Detention and Interrogation Program,’ already being widely referred to as the Senate Torture Report. The book – The Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture – will be available in bookstores on Tuesday, December 30.
Five years in the making, the report was officially declassified in April, but its release was delayed until yesterday, when a heavily redacted version of the report was made public. Called by the New York Times ‘a portrait of depravity that is hard to comprehend and even harder to stomach,’ the report proved to be a harsh and broad indictment of the C.I.A.s response to the September 11 terror attacks. In addition to detailing the scope and severity of interrogation techniques employed by the C.I.A, the report also found that the agency had repeatedly misled both the public and the White House.”
Bokens 480 sidor, som är en sammanfattning, är dock bara en bråkdel av rapportens sammanlagda 6000 sidor, som förblir hemliga. Melville House tar inte emot några statliga medel för att ge ut boken.
Melville House grundades 2001 av författaren och journalisten Dennis Johnson och skulptrisen Valerie Merians, med det uttalade syftet att ge ut poesi skriven som reaktion på terrorattackerna 11 september och dess efterspel. Förlaget har emellertid en bred och kvalificerad utgivning av både skön- och facklitteratur, Melville House har även en ganska omfattande backlist med översatt litteratur.
Enligt pressreleasen fanns det farhågor att tortyrrapporten skulle försvinna i mediabruset under helgerna och andra förlag har tydligen backat ur. Säger Dennis Johnson i pressreleasen: ”But it’s probably the most important government document of our generation, even one of the most significant in the history of our democracy.”
Andra statliga rapporter, som 11-Semptember rapporten och den pinsamma Starrapporten, har sålt i upplagor på flera hundra tusen. Melville House planerar att ge ut Senatens tortyrrapport i en första upplaga om 50.000 exemplar. Min gissning är att den kommer att sälja slut snabbt.
