När man följer den amerikanska, och i någon mån den brittiska, bokutgivningen får man en känsla av att tempot är betydligt mycket mer uppskruvat än i Sverige. Många sajter, tidningar och tidskrifter väljer ut de 5, 10 eller 15 böcker de tycker är mest spännande eller intressanta varje månad. Och i slutet av årets ägnas mycket energi och fantasi åt årsbästalistorna.
Vi följer flera av de här publikationerna och provar att göra ett eget urval för maj 2015. Det kan vara både skön- och facklitteratur. Det kan vara översatt litteratur men oftast böcker skrivna på engelska. Vi använder vår erfarenhet och fingertoppskänsla och hoppas att urvalet blir minst lika bra som på de amerikanska listorna, men lite mera BearBooks.
Mislaid (Ecco) av Nell Zink
Zinks debutroman, relationsdramat The Wallcreeper, var en av förra årets mest hyllade och omtalade. Jag läste en mindre uppskattande recension, men överlag var det mycket positivt.
Nell Zink är dessutom välsignad av Jonathan Franzen, som är en smått fanatisk fågelskådare. Debutromanen har fått sitt namn efter en rar fågel och handlar om fågelskådare. Det var i princip fågelskådandet som höll samman relationen mellan bokens båda huvudpersoner. Mislaid handlar också om familjer i sönderfall, men också om hur de ska kunna byggas upp igen på en mer stabil grund.
Breezeway: New Poems (Ecco) av John Ashbery
En av de allra största nutida engelskspråkiga poeterna, som lätt som en plätt växlar om mellan visdom och humor. Lika uppfinningsrik som inflytelserik, en genuin gigant.

The Making of Zombie Wars (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) av Aleksandar Hemon
Hemon finns översatt till svenska och det jag läst har varit väldigt bra. Det här verkar mindre seriöst, han öser på med sex, våld och, tack och lov, en massa humor. Hans roligaste bok sägs det.
City by City: Dispatches from the American Metropolis (n+1) Red. Stephen Squibb och Keith Gessen
”City by City is a collection of essays—historical, personal, often somewhere in between—about the present and future of American cities. It looks at the national rollback in industry that has caused the death of factory towns like Greensboro, North Carolina, and Reading, Pennsylvania. It also looks at the miniature engines of prosperity that have gentrified places like Brooklyn and Boise. In between are stories both telling and strange.”

Jag har en känsla av att vi är grundlurade, också i Sverige. Det är något genuint obehagligt med att tvånget att vara glad, optimistisk och lycklig ökar stadigt samtidigt som de sociala och ekonomiska klyftorna har ökat enormt.
Blue Fasa (New Directions) av Nathaniel Mackey
”Nathaniel Mackey’s sixth collection of poems, Blue Fasa, continues what the New Yorker has described as the ‘mythological conception’ and ‘descriptive daring’ of his two intertwined serial poems – where, however, ‘no prior knowledge is required’ for readers new to this poet’s visionary work. This collection takes its title from two related black musical traditions, a West African griot epic as told by the Fasa, a clan in ancient Ghana, and trumpeter Kenny Dorham’s hard bop classic ‘Blue Bossa,’ influenced by the emergence of Brazilian bossa nova. Why Grow Up?: Subversive Thoughts for an Infantile Age (FSG) av Susan Neiman
När jag läste den här boktiteln såg jag en reaktionär och bitter man framför mig, en man som läser lusen av hela samtiden och ställer diagnosen infantil. Men det här ska vara något helt annat och mer intressant, undersökande och filosofiskt.
