För en tid sedan utsågs Marlon James till vinnare av Man Booker-priset. Och nu är vinnarna av ett annat tungt pris i den engelskspråkiga världen, National Book Awards, utsedda. Så här skrev vi när den korta listan med prosaböcker presenterades: ”Vi tycker att det vore kul om en novellsamling vann, precis som förra året, då Phil Klay vann med Redeployment. Oddsen talar för Yanagihara.”

Ja, oddsen talade för Hanya Yanagihara, precis som inför Man Booker-priset, men vinnare i den tyngsta klassen, fiction, amerikansk beteckning på prosaböcker, är Adam Johnson, född 1967, med novellsamlingen Fortune Smiles (Random House). Det tycker vi, som vurmar för novellen som genre, är riktigt roligt.
Det bör dessutom vara första gången i prisets historia, som en novellsamling vinner två år i rad. Och det beror inte på att det saknades motstånd på den långa och korta listan, Fortune Smiles tävlade mot böcker av, förutom Yanagihara, Nell Zink, Karen E. Bender, hyllade debutanten Angela Flournoy och Lauren Groff. Ett stort grattis till Adam Johnson, som hittills är mest känd för romanen The Orphan Master’s Son (2012).

I klassen sakprosa vann Ta-Nehisi Coates, med Between the World and Me (Spiegel & Grau/Penguin Random House). Coates skriver om att vara färgaad i dagens Amerika, som fortfarande är både segregerat och rasistiskt. Boken har formen av ett brev riktat till Coates son. Läs vår recension
