Vad vet man om Kafka, egentligen?

I do not know. This essay could come down to just that. I have avoided writing about Kafka because – I do not know – I do not know where he is; I do not know what to say; I do not know what I do not know about Kafka. My suspicion is, I do not know because Kafka did not want me or any reader to know. At my most pissed off with him, I look at his stories and novels as clockwork contraptions for making mystification.”

Wikipedia

Stämningen är ofta väldigt viktig i Arthur Conan Doyles noveller, ibland lika viktig som hos Edgar Allan Poe.

Det här stycket i första halvan av ”The Five Orange Pips” anger tonen i denna tidiga Sherlock Holmes-berättelse: ”It was in the latter days of September, and the equinoctial gales had set in with exceptional violence. All day the wind had screamed and the rain had beaten against the windows, so that even here in the heart of great, hand-made London we were forced to raise our minds for the instant from the routine of life and to recognize the presence of those great elemental forces which shriek at mankind through the bars of his civilization, like untamed beasts in a cage.”

Silver blaze

The case of lady Sannox
